The story of Il Volo – told by the trio with two books, “An Extraordinary Adventure” and “Il Volo. What I carry in my heart” – began in 2009, when the three young artists debuted as individual participants in the RAI 1 talent show ”Ti lascio una canzone.” Noticed by Michele Torpedine, former manager for big names such as Andrea Bocelli and Zucchero, the trio quickly launched their international artistic career. Their recording debut in 2010 with the self-titled album “Il Volo” led them to participate in the “We Are The World for Haiti” project alongside 80 international stars, including Celine Dion, Bono, Lady Gaga, Carlos Santana, Barbra Streisand, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Natalie Cole, and Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.
A defining moment in their history was the twelve-concert tour with Barbra Streisand in America and Canada in 2012. This preceded the recording of duets for their second album, “We Are Love” (2012), featuring Placido Domingo and Eros Ramazzotti.
In 2015 Il Volo won the Sanremo Festival with the song “Grande Amore” and subsequently released the ep “Sanremo Grande Amore” (Sony Music Itay), which collects famous songs from the history of the Festival reinterpreted in a contemporary and international key. The trio thus earned third place at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, and the European TV audience rewarded them by making them reach the top of the charts in televoting. That same year, Il Volo releases its fourth studio album, “L’amore si muove.”
2016 and 2017 are the years dedicated to “Notte magica” (a project by Michele Torpedine), the tribute to the 1990 event by the THREE TENORS, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Piazza Santa Croce in Florence is the extraordinary setting of the concert “Notte Magica – Tribute to the Three Tenors,” which featured the extraordinary participation of Placido Domingo, who has always been their sincere admirer as Conductor. On January 26, 2019, the Italian trio performed in Panama on the occasion of the XXXIV World Youth Day, in front of Pope Francis and more than a million people, and the event was broadcast worldwide. An appointment that came after another great artistic and human adventure: in December 2018 Il Volo lived for a few days at the Unifil base in Tyre, Lebanon, to support Italian troops on a peace mission.
In 2019, the year of their tenth artistic anniversary, Il Volo participates in the 69th edition of the Sanremo Festival and earns third place with the song “Musica che resta” (written by Gianna Nannini, among others). Subsequently, the album “Musica” is released and the tour between Europe, Japan and America begins. They return as guests at Sanremo in 2021 with an emotional performance in honor of Ennio Morricone. On June 5, they perform in prime time on RAI 1 from the Arena of Verona with the big event “IL VOLO – Tribute to ENNIO MORRICONE,” recording record ratings with 4,702,000 viewers. On November 5, the album “IL VOLO SINGS MORRICONE” (Epic/Sony Music) was released, an overwhelming journey inside the art of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. In 2022 they are busy with a world tour that has seen them perform in as many as 4 continents in just a few months; the year ends with “Il Volo – Natale a Gerusalemme” (a project by Michele Torpedine), the prime-time date on Channel 5 in which the unmistakable voice of the trio joined the evocative atmosphere in the Holy Land that served as the backdrop for the emotional concert.
Following the success of the six special dates at Milan’s Arcimboldi Theater and the European tour that saw them take on prestigious stages in 2023, Il Volo released a Christmas EP entitled “4 Xmas” on November 3, containing four songs, including a special version of “Happy Xmas (Was Is Over),” “Amazing Grace,” “O Tannenbaum” and “Feliz Navidad.”
